Area Facts: In 1979, the Chinese replaced the British Wade-Giles name-spelling system used in Chinese-English translations with the more Americanized "pinyin" system, which the U.S. also uses. Mao Tse-Tung, for example, is written as Mao Zedung in all current official documents. The international area code for the People's Republic of China is 86.
